SonyLiv has been striving to bring riveting and pertinent stories from India. As a part of that endeavour, the OTT platform has been consistent in strengthening its southern content slate. Now, the platform is all set for the OTT release of the award-winning film Thaen, a story that highlights the fierce realities of society. Thaen is all set to release on SonyLiv on June 25.

Directed by Ganesh Vinayakan and produced by Ambalavanan.B’s Prema.P & AP Productions, Thaen has been widely appreciated at film festivals around the world. It has been nominated for awards 40 times too. The movie was one of the two Tamil films which were selected at the Indian Panorama 2020. Thaen had also been to the 11th Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival, Cult Critic Movie Awards 2020, New Delhi Film Festival and the Ayodhya Film Festival.

While talking about the movie, Ganesh said in a statement: “The plight of an uneducated man struggling for his rights, this is the reality of many… ‘Thaen’ brings to the fore his struggle in relatable storytelling. The film is based on true events, relevant in today’s times and I am sure the movie will touch the hearts of many.”

Thaen revolves around the lives of Velu (Tharun Kumar) and his wife Poongodi (Abarnathi) who are living a seemingly happy life with their daughter in a remote village on a hillside. In an unfortunate turn of events, Poongodi falls ill and is later diagnosed with a rare terminal illness. Velu struggles to get medical support for Poongodi as they are denied access to good healthcare under the pretext of lack of valid documents to prove their citizenship.

The dialogues and scenes of the film question how these poor people have to face the brunt of bureaucratic inefficiency and a lack of medical infrastructure. The film sends out a strong social message which is sure to hit the right chord with the audience. Apart from Tamil, Thaen will be available in Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada languages.
