Ajith-starrer Dheena is all set to have a re-release on May 1! The AR Murugadoss film, which first hit the big screens in 2001, was a critical success upon its release. With Ajith’s birthday coming up on May 1, theatres are gearing up for the re-release of the film. The film, which earned Ajith the title ‘Thala’, has been a game changer in the actor’s career. But this Ajith-starrer is also available for streaming on OTT!
While some may be preparing to watch the theatrical re-release of the film, others might prefer to enjoy it from the comfort of their homes. If you're a fan of binge-watching action dramas, you're in luck – the Ajith-starrer Tamil blockbuster is now available for streaming on Sun NXT, and OTTplay Premium. You can now stream the blockbuster Tamil film which also marked the Tamil film debut of Malayalam star Suresh Gopi. Laila plays the female lead in the actioner.
This action drama, helmed by AR Murugadoss in his directorial debut, revolves around Ajith’s character named Dheena, who works for his brother Aadikesavan as a henchman. One day, he meets Chitra and they fall in love. Meanwhile, Dheena's sister, Shanti, secretly loves Chitra's brother. However, a series of misunderstandings result in Shanti's death, which prompts Aadikesavan to vow revenge against her boyfriend's family. Dheena must now make a difficult choice: follow his brother's orders or fulfill his sister's dying wish to safeguard Chitra and her family, whom he deeply cares about.
The film upon its release received huge appreciation, with critics and audiences hailing the film for its action-entertainment quotient. Following the success of the film, Ajith earned the nickname ‘Thala’, and he is still fondly called so by his fans. The film helped the then debutant AR Murugadoss rise to popularity, with the film also getting remade in Kannada as Dhumm and in Bengali as Deva.

Besides the lead characters, the film also stars Bala Singh, Vaishnavi, Sheela and Rajesh among others. Interestingly, Premam director Alphonse Puthren also makes a cameo appearance in the film. The original background score and soundtrack for the film were composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
