Despite being released in cinemas on April 7, August 16, 1947 received mixed reactions from critics and failed to make an impact at the box office. However, the passionate project remains close to the heart of A. R. Murugadoss, who produced the movie.
"The moment I heard of these shocking events from a village elder, I realized there is so much about the past that we still don't know. Weaving folklore and reality together, August 16, 1947 was a chapter of independence that touched my heart. And for the sake of our forefathers and our country's history, I thought we must seek an apology for the events of August 16, 1947 from the British!," said Murugadoss.
The plot of August 16, 1947 is intriguing and is set in rural India, far away from the epicentre of the freedom struggle. Due to a lack of communication means, the villagers don't find out that India achieved independence on August 16, 1947. Their British employers continue to exploit their work by keeping them in the dark. However, there is a revolt brewing against the British invaders in the village, and people are ready to wage a battle for freedom.
The movie stars Jason Shah, Pugazh, Richard Ashton, and Revathy Sharma, besides Gautham Karthik
