From F9 to Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, movies that failed to live up to their first parts.
Even Christopher Nolan, at this point, has agreed that a healthy Hollywood ecosystem needs franchises that make other movies possible. So when studios run behind and with IP movies progressing into a franchise, and well, some even universes of their own, you now know a major outcome of it is a business trigger for multiple other aspects and projects. In the past couple of years, the bug of creating franchises has bitten filmmakers across the world. But are they really working and respecting the predecessor that chalked the path for them?
The major reason for a sequel to be born is the success of the predecessor. In Hollywood, a business of a billion or something around is what serves as motivation for any studio to take that IP ahead. Be it Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom that is walking on a billion-dollar carpet laid by Aquaman 1, or The Marvels that was walking on a massive collection of Captain Marvels, they all have a wealthy padding.
But do they manage to earn as good as the first? Well, many fail. So today we list down 5 popular movie sequels that failed to create the billion-dollar magic that their previous films did.
The Marvels (2023):
The Marvels, MCU’s latest release, has been surrounded by a lot of conversation about superhero fatigue. Seems like that did reflect on the movie’s box office run. While Captain Marvel, of whom the Nia DaCosta directorial is a seque l, had earned $1.1 billion at the box office. However, The Marvels is struggling to earn even $200 million. The movie right now stands at $188 million.
Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017):
Dead Men Tell No Tales was walking on a thin line because not one but two movies before it, Dead Man’s Chest and On Stranger Tides, both did business of over $1 billion. The 2017 Johnny Depp starrer, however, was doomed because it was being called weak even before the release. However, it did manage to earn $794 Million at the Box Office, which is a more than decent number for a normal movie. But in the world of Pirates, it was labeled a dud.
Transformers: The Last Knight (2017):
The most surprising on this list for the very reason that it was a movie that was giving us the origin story of Optimus Prime. Dark Of The Moon that released in 2011 had earned $1.1 billion, so The Last Knight had a huge responsibility that it did not manage to fulfill. The latter managed to only earn a bit over $600 million.
F9: The Fast Saga (2021):
The on-screen and off-screen drama that was and still is attached to the Fast & Furious franchise makes it one that hits the headlines more often than all others. While the franchise has a loyal fanbase that has stayed with them for two decades, the ninth installment titled F9 did suffer to match up with the track record. Furious 7 brought $1.5 billion Box office, and The Fate Of The Furious also earned over a billion. F9, however, ended its run on $719 Million.
Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker (2019):
Ever heard of a movie that earned $1 Billion but still couldn’t live up to the expectations that were set for its earlier parts? Rise Of The Skywalker is an exception that many of us refuse to believe. Even when it earned $1 billion gross, it still couldn’t match with the $2 billion earning of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and The Last Jedi’s $1.3 Billion.
