Priyadarshan has remade many of his Malayalam films in Bollywood which originally starred Mohanlal in the leading role.
When the trailer for Hungama 2 was dropped, several Malayalis realised the film is the remake of Priyadarshan's 1994 film Minnaram. The Malayalam film starred Mohanlal, Shobana, Jagathy Sreekumar and Thilakan in the lead roles. While for the upcoming film which is a sequel to Hungama the filmmaker cast Paresh Rawal, Shilpa Shetty, Meezaan Jaffrey and Pranitha Subhash as protagonists.
But this is not the first time Priyadarshan has remade Malayalam movies in Bollywood. The celebrated director has helmed several Hindi movies which are remakes of not only his movies but of other directors as well. Priyadarshan has often directed Mohanlal in his movies, thus his remakes are most of the superstar starrers only.
As Hungama 2 is set to stream on Disney+ Hotstar from July 23, 2021, let's look at a few Mohanlal films remade in Hindi.
Boeing Boeing - Garam Masala
Priyadarshan's 1985 directorial Boeing Boeing starred Mohanlal and Mukesh in the leading roles. The filmmaker remade the film in Hindi in 2005 titled Garam Masala which starred Akshay Kumar and John Abraham along with Paresh Rawal.
Chandralekha - Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega
Mohanlal starred alongside Pooja Batra and Sukanya in Chandralekha directed by Priyadarshan. In 2000, the 1997 film was remade in Hindi as Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega starring Salman Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji in the lead roles.
Drishyam - Drishyam
Jeethu Joseph's 2013 blockbuster Drishyam starring Mohanlal and Meena Sagar in the lead roles has been remade in multiple languages. The Hindi film of the same name was directed by the late Nishikant Kamath and starred Ajay Devgn, Tabu and Shriya Saran in the lead roles. The Bollywood film released in 2015.
Kilukkam - Muskurahat
Kilukkam which released in 1991 starred Mohanlal, Revathy, Jagathy and Thilakan in the lead roles. The remake of the film was done by the original director Priyadarshan with Revathy reprising her role as the female lead. Muskurahat released in 1992 and was a box office disaster in Hindi.
Kireedam - Gardish
1989 film Kireedam bagged Mohanlal a Special Mention at National Film Awards. The film directed by Sibi Malayil was remade in Bollywood by Priyadarshan as Gardish wherein Jackie Shroff played the leading role. The film released in 1993.
Manichithrathazhu - Bhool Bhulaiyya
Fazil's Manichitrathazhu is a cult film that has been remade in about four languages. The film released in 1993 starred Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi and Shobana in the lead roles. Priyadarshan helmed the Bollywood remake Bhool Bhulaiyya in 2007 with Akshay Kumar playing Mohanlal's role co-starring Vidya Balan and Shiney Ahuja.
Minnaram - Hungama 2
The latest Mohanlal film to be remade in Bollywood is Minnaram which also starred Shobana and Thilakan. Priyadarshan directed his 1994 directorial in Hindi as Hungama 2 starring Paresh Rawal, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Meezaan Jaaferi and Pranitha Subhash.
Poochakkoru Mookkuthi - Hungama
While the prequel to Hungama 2 was the 2003 release Hungama a remake of Priyadarshan's directorial debut Poochakkoru Mookkuthi (1984). The original film starred Mohanlal, Shankar and Menaka in the lead roles. While the Bollywood film featured Akshaye Khanna, Aftab Shivdasani, Paresh Rawal and Rimi Sen as protagonists.
Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam - Yeh Teraa Ghar Yeh Meraa Ghar
Sathyan Anthikad's film Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam released in 1986 was remade in Hindi as Yeh Teraa Ghar Yeh Meraa Ghar in 2001 by Priyadarshan. The Malayalam film featured Mohanlal, Karthika, Sreenivasan and MG Soman, while the Bollywood remake starred Suniel Shetty, Mahima Chaudhry and Paresh Rawal.
Thalavattam - Kyon Ki...
Salman Khan's Kyon Ki co-starring Kareena Kapoor Khan is the Hindi remake of the Priyadarshan film Thalavattam featuring Mohanlal and Karthika in the lead roles. The Malayalam film released in 1986, while the remake came 19 years later.
Thenmavin Kombath - Saat Rang Ke Sapne
Mohanlal and Shobana starrer Thenmavin Kombath is directed by Priyadarshan and released in 1994. The film was remade in Hindi four years later as Saat Rang Ke Sapne by the filmmaker and roped in Arvind Swami and Juhi Chawla in the lead roles.
Vellanakalude Nadu - Khatta Meetha
After more than two decades Priyadarshan made his political satire film Vellanakalude Nadu in Hindi as Khatta Meetha. Like most of the films, Mohanlal's role is played by Akshay Kumar, while Trisha made her Bollywood debut with the film as she stepped into the shoes of Shobana.
