Rajinikanth's unending love affair with box office
Once again Rajinikanth proved that he's the 'king of box office' with Jailer. The movie was released at a time when Rajinikanth's last two movies (Darbar and Annaatthe), failed to capture the imagination of the movie-going audiences. This led to questions about the diminishing popularity of Rajinikanth's films, which had once been an unstoppable force at the box office.
Is the end of Rajinikanth's supremacy at the box office? If yes, then who is the next Superstar of Tamil cinema? These questions have been in circulation during the last few years. And the success of Jailer has rendered such questions pointless.
Jailer is Rajinikanth's show all the way
Jailer was completely mounted on the massive stardom of Rajinikanth. And the audience lapped it up, despite shortcomings and gaps in the movie's narrative. The movie served as a reminder that when it comes to Rajinikanth movies, the audiences are willing to overlook narrative issues.
Jailer opened in cinemas on August 10 amid a lot of fanfare and soon became one of the highest-grossing moves in Rajinikanth's career. The only Tamil movie that has grossed over Rs 600 crore in ticket sales is Rajinikanth's 2.0. And the trade is confident that Jailer will join this elite club before the end of its theatrical run.
In 22 days, Jailer has raked in over Rs 550 crore at the box office. Achieving the next Rs 50 crore might be a slower journey due to upcoming competition, including Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan.
It's noteworthy that Jailer achieved this historic box office record without making big gains in the Hindi belt.
