Bringing real-life events onto the big screen is not new for maker Arindam Sil. Earlier, he adapted the real-life hanging of Dhananjaya Chatterjee, who was convicted in the Hetal Parekh rape and murder case in 2004. In 2017, Arindam Sil made his film Dhananjay with Anirban Bhattacharya. Later, the director also picturised Mahashweta Devi’s life on the screen in his film, Mahananda.
According to Tollywood sources, he is all set to bring yet another real-life incident on the screen based on the Surupa Guha-Indranath Guha case. It will come either as a film or a web series.
In 1976, Kolkata was stirred by Surupa Guha's death. Her husband Indranath Guha – an acclaimed educationist – was accused of murdering her. It was alleged that the death was later covered up as a suicide. But the then judge Mahaptra stuck to his decision that Surupa was murdered.
According to the reports, it was proved that she was murdered by poisoning her lassi. The intimacy between Surupa's husband and a celebrated Bengali actress-cum-director came to the news. They were interrogated in the court also.
According to Anandabazar Patrika and Aajkal Dot Net, this incident will be cinematised now. The film Dhananjay had an ensemble cast. Anirban Bhattacharya played Dhananjay. Mimi Chakraborty, Koushik Sen, Anusha Viswanathan, Sudipta Chakraborty, and Kanchan Mullick also played important characters. In the present film, the popular Bangladeshi actor Arefin Shubho, Indrasish Roy, and Souraseni Maitra will play pivotal roles. Arunima Ghosh can also be in the film. However, there has been no confirmation on the news yet.
As per the reports, the shooting will start on June 21. It will take place all over Kolkata. Camelia Production House will produce the film.
