Character insights

For those who are unaware, Jason Momoa portrays Arthur Curry/Aquaman, the ruler of Atlantis, who possesses superhuman swimming speed and the ability to control and summon underwater creatures.

The producer, Peter Safran, referred to Arthur as the ultimate outsider and said that the character doesn't believe he's part of the surface world or Atlantis, adding that Arthur has never felt at home in either culture.

According to director James Wan, the film is a faithful sequel to Aquaman (2018), in which Arthur continues his journey as he protects his family and realm while juggling his roles as king of Atlantis and a parent. Arthur, the protagonist, is a superhero with human and superhuman abilities who finds himself in a high-stakes, epic struggle, according to Safran. Wan included Arthur Jr. because he thought it was a logical continuation of the first film; in it, he contrasted Arthur's kingly duties with those of a father.

Critical reception

The film's production budget was $205-215 million, and it earned $434 million worldwide despite reviewers' mostly poor reviews.
