While the number of direct-to-OTT Malayalam releases have dwindled this year, Sunny Wayne-starrer Appan is the latest to choose the straight-to-digital route. The movie, which is touted to eb a family drama, is set for its release in October end.

The movie, which is helmed by Maju who has also co-written its script with R Jayakumar, revolves around a toxic patriarch essayed by Alencier Ley Lopez. The impact his chauvinistic ways on his family and the people around him form the plot of the film, which also stars Ananya, Grace Antony Radhika Radhakrishnan and Pauly Valson in pivotal roles.

The film, set in the high ranges of Kerala, has Sunny essaying the only son in the family. He decides to not suffer his father’s taunts and go against him, leaving the four female protagonists to fend for themselves. Sunny and Maju had previously worked together in the latter’s directorial debut French Vipalavam.

In an earlier interview, the movie’s director Maju had said that movie, despite having doses of dark humour, also showcases an array of complex emotions that each character goes through from start to finish in the movie. The roles, played by the four female actors, are polar opposites but they are united by a common purpose due to their turbulent past.

Several who had attended the film’s preview earlier this year had praised its content and making. The movie’s OTT rights were snapped by Sony LIV in June. While it took the OTT platform four months to schedule its release, Appan will finally drop on the streaming platform on October 28.

This will be the second Malayalam release on the platform after Jayasurya’s thriller Eesho, which is dropped on Sony LIV earlier this month. Sony LIV now also hold record for the most number of direct-to-OTT Malayalam releases ever since it began with streaming Tovino Thomas’ Kaanekkaane last year.
