Even though Tovino Thomas’ Anweshippin Kandethum might not have gotten its due this ‘Fab Feb’ in Malayalam cinema that saw the releases of movies such as Mammootty’s Bramayugam and box office juggernauts Premalu and Manjummel Boys, the Darwin Kuriakose crime-thriller still won a lot of appreciation from the audience and managed to do decent business too. So much that its makers are now considering a sequel.

In an exclusive chat with OTTplay, its director Darwin tells us though they didn’t have any solid plans for the second instalment of the movie, which revolves around a tainted rookie sub inspector and his team of cops as they try to fulfil their duty with mixed results, the reception of the film as well as its lead actor Tovino’s enthusiasm has prompted them to think about the sequel.

Anweshippin Kandethum’s reception prompts makers to think about sequel

Anweshippin Kandethum ends up with its characters led by Tovino’s Anand Narayanan not quite getting the poetic justice they deserved despite coming so close to apprehending a culprit and redeeming themselves for a previous botched case that resulted in their suspensions.

“While we were shooting the film, we had talked to Jinu (Abraham) chettan about a sequel, because it’s always the writer’s call. So, he said if Anweshippin Kandethum is received well in theatres, we could plan,” says Darwin. “That was the only discussion we had before the film’s release. But as soon as the movie hit theatres, Tovino called us and said that we should definitely plan a sequel.”

Whether they have already zeroed in on a thread as the new case for the cops to chase next, the filmmaker says, “The movie has the possibility of placing the next story in any time period – between now and their retirement. The sequel might not happen soon, but it will in due time. Right now, we don’t want the characters’ journey to end here and want to take them to a period where they do succeed. Those discussions are going on.”
