Antakshari release date: When and where to watch Saiju Kurup’s quirky crime thriller

The movie, which also has Shabareesh Varma, Priyanka Nair and Sudhy Kopa, is a direct-to-OTT release

This year is already proving to be special for Malayalam actor Saiju Kurup. His 100th movie Upacharapoorvam Gunda Jayan, which hit theatres in February, had him play his first titular role and now the actor is set for the release of Antakshari, which again has him essaying the protagonist.

The direct-to-OTT release has an ensemble cast featuring Vijay Babu, Sudhy Kopa, Shabareesh Varma and Priyanka Nair in pivotal roles. Directed by Vipin Das, the quirky crime thriller was shot entirely during the pandemic and Drishyam filmmaker Jeethu Joseph will be presenting the film, which is set to release on Sony LIV in April.

The movie has Saiju playing the role of a police officer, who has a penchant for playing the game of antakshari. However, when a criminal starts becoming obsessed with antakshari and begins to engage the cop, it turns into a thrilling cat-and-mouse game. Vipin had earlier told OTTplay that the movie has all elements of a crime thriller and is an unconventional-yet-surprising blend of content that is sure to pique the interest of the audience.

Incidentally, Vipin, who had earlier directed the Gokul Suresh-starrer Mudhugauv, had first pitched the story of Antakshari to Jeethu way back in 2016. However, with the duo getting busy with other projects, the film was kept on the backburner and Vipin only revived it in 2020 after the first lockdown. After completing the shoot of the movie, he and the producers had screened the movie for Jeethu, who was impressed and decided to collaborate with the team.

The film will have Saiju in a full-length role as its hero, while Priyanka will be essaying the role of his wife, who works as a nurse. The movie is currently expected to release on the streaming platform on April 22. Sony LIV also has Mammootty and Parvathy Thiruvothu’s Puzhu set for release soon.
