Even as Anoop Menon’s debut directorial King Fish is yet to see the light of the day, his sophomore venture Padma will now be the first to release in theatres. The movie, which is also scripted by the actor, is set to hit theatres on July 15.

Starring National Award-winning actress Surabhi Lakshmi in the titular role, the film revolves around her character and how she struggles to adjust in urban, cosmopolitan setting after being married to Anoop’s character. The makers of the movie, which was shot during the lockdown, have been releasing entertaining snippets from it since last year.

Padma also has Mala Parvathi and Shankar Ramakrishnan as part of the cast. Ninoy Varghese is its music director and photographer Mahadevan Thampi has cranked the camera. The movie’s distribution has been picked up by production designer NM Badusha’s company, which will also be distributing Shane Nigam and Vinay Forrt’s Bermuda.

Meanwhile, there’s still no news on when King Fish, which has Anoop and director Ranjith in lead roles, will release. The movie had completed shooting before the pandemic but its release has been put on hold reportedly due to financial issues of the producers.

Anoop is currently shooting for Kannan Thamarakkulam’s Varaal, which he has also scripted. The final schedule of the political-thriller, which also has Prakash Raj, Sunny Wayne, Madhuri Briganza, Renji Panicker and Shankar Ramakrishnan, is currently progressing in London. Prakash Raj plays Kerala chief minister in the film, which revolves around “politicians and their politics”. The movie marks Anoop second collaboration with Kannan after Vidhi: The Verdict, which revolved around the Maradu flat demolitions.

Anoop’s previous releases this year – CBI 5: The Brain and Twenty One Grams – dropped on OTT platforms Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar, respectively, earlier this month and both films have gone on to top the charts of the most-viewed movies in India the previous week.
