Ankahi Kahaniya: Rinku Rajguru on how her Maharashtrian connection helped her connect with Manjari

Rinku found the Maharashtrian girl she plays in Abhishek Chaubey’s short in Ankahi Kahaniya, different from the characters she has played so far.

In Netflix’s anthology feature Ankahi Kahaniya, Rinku Rajguru is cast opposite Delzad Hiwale in Abhishek Chaubey’s short. She essays the role of Manjari, who frequently visits Pradeep Talkies, where Nandu, played by Hiwale works as an usher. The two grow close and seek solace in each other from their beaten-down lives.

Rinku plays a Marathi girl in the series and her emotive eyes and face fit in well in Abhishek’s story. Speaking about her Marathi accent to Scroll.in, the actor said that though she had asked for an accent coach, but since she has played Marathi characters previously, her accent worked for the makers just fine. “If a director tells me I need to change my accent, I will definitely work on it,” she said.

The 200 - Halla Ho! actor doesn’t look at language as a limitation. She said that her primary focus is to be a part of ‘good films, work with good people and portray all kinds of different characters.’

In the short in Ankahi Kahaniya, the story takes place in the 1980s, which provided her the space to play a Maharashtrian woman of a different nuance and shade. Rinku said that her own Marathi identity helped her connect with her character. “All Abhishek sir told me was, behave like a young woman in the 1980s,” she added while also sharing that she learned needlework to play Manjari. Rinku is already skilled at embroidery.

Her approach to acting is instinctive and observational rather than having too many discussions. “I listen a lot since my job is to execute the director’s vision,” said the actor. Rinku is more inclined towards movies than web series simply because of the shorter duration of shoots but wouldn’t refuse either.

Rinku Rajguru rose to overnight fame with Nagaraj Manjule’s Sairat in 2016 and the barely 21-year-old actor has numerous projects already, be it having a direct-to-digital Hindi movie, three Marathi films, or a significant character to play in a web series. She had starred in the Marathi political drama Kaagar, the well-received Zee5 film 200 - Halla Ho! and Amazon Prime Video’s Unpaused before Ankahi Kahaniya came her way.
