It won't be wrong to say that Animal is the most controversial film ever in Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor's career so far. The film has reignited a new wave of heated discussions on social media after becoming available for streaming earlier this week.

Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga's latest blockbuster, Animal, made its digital debut on Netflix on January 26 , coinciding with the celebration of India's Republic Day. The movie has prompted fervent debates about its merits and demerits among the new audience that flocked to the streaming platform.

Animal OTT release sparks new debates

Devoted fans of Animal have emerged as staunch defenders of the film, exhibiting unwavering support and adopting a no-prisoner approach against its critics. However, a recent social media post on X, formerly Twitter, has added fuel to the fire. The post, featuring a meme, humorously highlights a major narrative loophole in the movie. The meme portrays a multitude of police officers in a deep slumber on a railway station platform, with the caption humorously suggesting the state of law enforcement in the movie.

Animal follows Ranbir Kapoor's character, Ranveer Singh, engaging in unbridled violence, leaving behind a trail of dead bodies and widespread destruction. In a particularly intense scene, Ranveer single-handedly dispatches about 100 men using an axe and a colossal war machine, nearly setting a building ablaze. Despite wreaking havoc on a monumental scale in Delhi, the character faces no legal consequences, creating a narrative loophole that challenges the suspension of disbelief for many viewers.

The aforementioned post has generated more than 1.5 million impressions within a few hours since it was posted. The post, rife with thousands of likes and hundreds of comments, has become a focal point for fans expressing their discontent.

Ranbir Kapoor fans attack Tamil cinema

Die-hard supporters of Ranbir Kapoor and director Sandeep Reddy Vanga have vehemently objected to the meme, leading to a torrent of attacks against the Tamil film industry. Blockbusters like Ponniyin Selvan 2, Leo, and even Superstar Rajinikanth's Jailer are under fire, with fans fiercely defending Animal.

Animal tells the story of a grown man grappling with unresolved father issues. Feeling neglected by his rich father, Balbir Singh, Ranveer channels his frustration against enemies attempting to harm his father, forming the crux of Animal.

Animal was also accused of engaging in blatant misogyny. Especially the scene where Ranveer asks a girl to lick his shoes to profess her love for him caused massive outrage among a sizable audience.

Despite all the criticism and controversies, Animal managed to post record numbers at the global box office, becoming one of the highest-grossing Hindi films in 2023. According to reports, Animal has grossed over Rs 900 crore from its worldwide ticket sales making it the biggest-ever hit in Ranbir's career.

Besides Ranbir, Animal also stars Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna, and Triptii Dimri.
