Animal edges out Hollywood biggies

Looks like the wrath of 'Animal' has engulfed not just Indian viewer but a global audience at large. Sandeep Reddy Vanga's new film might have attracted polarizing views (as expected) but it has surely 'set the cash registers ringing' and the latest trade reports reflect just that.

According to Variety, the Ranbir Kapoor-led film has beaten the likes of Ridley Scott's 'Napoleon' and the latest Hunger Games instalment in its box office pursuits. Quoting Com Score, the report shares that 'Animal' has grossed a whopping $42.1 million (more than Rs. 350 crores!) worldwide over the last three days and has even edged out Hollywood biggies like Joaquin Pheonix starrer 'Napoleon' ($35.7 million), 'The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes' ($29.4 million) and Beyoncé's concert film 'Renaissance' at $27.4 million. Both 'Animal' and 'Renaissance' stand as "fresh releases" as opposed to the other two films on the list.

'Animal's domestic performance, of course, is a huge contributor to this yield and as per trade reports, the film has already collected over Rs. 200 crores in India alone (net figures). The success cannot be termed unprecedented by any means, mainly because the film generated great buzz prior to its release and despite all the narrative shortcomings that have to light over the last couple of dates, audiences have responded tremendously well.

While Ranbir Kapoor and the rest of the principal cast's performances have been highlighted, 'Animal' has also drawn strong criticism for its hyper-masculine treatment. Sandeep Reddy Vanga's previous two films, Arjun Reddy and its Hindi remake Kabir Singh, were subjects of similar discourse but one gathers that the filmmaker has doubled down on that manic "intensity" of his male protagonist. The performances of Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Rashmika Mandanna, too, have been praised.

Dunki - With no action or violence, will Shah Rukh Khan's film become the dark horse of the season?

Although unconfirmed, the post-credit sequence in 'Animal' has sparked rumours of a potential sequel named 'Animal Park'. More updates to follow.
