In an announcement made by Amazon Prime Video today, the streamer revealed that the highly anticipated psychological thriller Cruel Summer will be streaming exclusively on Prime Video worldwide from Friday, August 6, 2021, excluding the United States and Canada. The Amazon Prime Original series is an American teen drama thriller, set in the fictional town of Skylin, Texas and told over the same day across three summers in the 90s.
The story follows two teenage girls in the 90s when a beautiful and popular teen goes missing. Following the event, a seemingly unrelated girl transforms from a sweet and awkward outlier to take her place to become the most popular girl in town. However, a turn of events results in her becoming the most despised person in America. Each episode in the series is told from alternating POVs of the two girls.
The ensemble cast of the series includes actor and singer Olivia Holt alongside Chiara Aurelia, Michael Landes, Froy Gutierrez, Harley Quinn Smith, Allius Barnes, Blake Lee, Brooklyn Sudano and Sarah Drew, taking pivotal roles.
The upcoming psychological thriller is developed by Entertainment One (eOne) alongside Iron Ocean Productions. The pilot season will be helmed and executive produced by Max Winkler. The 10-episode Amazon Original series comes from The Sinner fame executive producer Michelle Purple and Jessica Biel, with creator and executive producer Bert V. Royal who previously worked on Easy A as well as showrunner and executive producer Tia Napolitano of Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19.
