Payal Kapadia’s directorial All We Imagine As Light is now all set to contest for an award category in another international film festival. The film has been selected to premiere at 49th Toronto International Film Festival under the Special Presentations segment. Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl will also feature under the same category.
At the 77th Cannes Film Festival, Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine As Light won the Grand Prix, which is the second-most prestigious prize after the Palme d'Or. Payal made history by becoming the first Indian to win this award.
Veteran director Shaji N Karun's Swaham (My Own) was the first Indian film to enter the main competition thirty years ago. Payal's movie was up against 21 others, such as Jacques Audiard's Emilia Perez, Sean Baker's Anora, Francis Ford Coppola's Megapolis, and Yorgos Lanthimos's Kinds of Kindness. The Palme d'Or went to Sean Baker's Anora this year. On social media, Malayalam film stars like Dulquer Salmaan, Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Mammootty, and others congratulated the team.
All We Imagine As Night stars Divya Prabha and Kani Kusruti as Malayali nurses employed in Mumbai. After its premiere, it received an eight-minute standing ovation. The two Malayali heroines in the movie find themselves entangled in a web of events that take place at different points in time.
The story of Prabha (Kani Kasruti), who gets an unexpected gift from her estranged husband, is explored in this Indo-French production, which is yet to have a theatrical release. Anu (Divya Prabha), her flatmate, finds a quiet place to be with her partner in the interim. The team has received praise from the festival corners ever since it debuted. The brilliance of All We Imagine As Light lies in its ability to condense and portray an epic ode to the city into the tiniest gestures and underwraps moments.
