Lal Salaam, directed by Aishwarya Rajinikanth and starring her father Rajinikanth, opened to mixed reviews
Filmmaker Aishwarya Rajinikanth recently helmed Tamil film Lal Salaam starring her father and actor Rajinikanth in a pivotal role. While the film received lukewarm response upon its release, Aishwarya recently opened about the reception Lal Salaam got.
The film features Rajinikanth in a pivotal role along with Vishnu Vishal and Vikranth in the lead roles. Backed by Lyca Productions, the film has music by AR Rahman.
Lal Salaam, directed by Aishwarya Rajinikanth, opened to mixed reviews. Recently, the director opened up about the criticism and feedback she received. In an interview with Cinema Vikatan, Aishwarya said, “Personally, I am extremely satisfied as a learner and filmmaker. The film is based on true incidents and hence there is no revelation or twists as such in the film. So, when we had the option to do a linear or non-linear pattern, we went in for the latter since the story is straightforward and simple.”

She added, “As a filmmaker, I saw the whole film together and not as first and second half. We thought of treating the first half in a non-linear fashion and make the second half linear which ties all the knots together. But as per the feedback I got, people were confused of the first half and which character to follow. I realised that they watched both the parts separately and that was a big learning. As a filmmaker I understood that audience saw in a different way. I will take both criticism and appreciation equally and happy, I can better myself and that is biggest learning.”
Lal Salaam released on February 9 alongside Manikandan-starrer Lover. While the latter got a better response than Lal Salaam, the Rajinikanth film was soon dethroned by Malayalam film Manjummel Boys. The film fared well at the box office and collected over Rs 21 crore in Tamil Nadu, overtaking Lal Salaam by a huge margin.
Lal Salaam is yet to get its official OTT release date. The film is expected to stream on Netflix soon. Lal Salaam is a cricket-based drama that follows rift that happens in a village where religion cracks the harmony among the people.
