Despite glowing reviews, filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj's Jigarthanda Double X has ended its box office run on a disappointing note.
Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj's latest film Jigarthanda Double X has ended its theatrical run on a very disappointing note, ahead of its OTT release this week. Based on the reports, it's clear that the film has fallen significantly short of its substantial budget.
A Cinetrak report reveals the disparity between the film's final global earnings and its extravagant budget. The film earned only Rs 66 crore from its worldwide ticket sales against its Rs 100 crore production cost, ending its three-week exclusive theatrical run on a less-than-ideal.
Earlier, the filmmakers had confirmed that Jigarthanda Double X was ten times more expensive than Jigarthanda (2014), also making it the costliest film in Karthik's career so far. However, the film sort of recouped its budget in ticket sales.

Jigarthanda Double X's disappointing theatrical run comes despite the film receiving highly favourable reviews from the critics. The film arrived in cinemas last month with glowing critical reviews. While the good word of mouth and reviews helped the film to perform better than actor Karthi's Japan, which was also released on November 10, it was not good enough to resonate with the wider audience.
Even though Jigarthanda Double X faced no significant rival at the box office, its performance remained below expectations. In India, the film has managed to only gross over Rs 53 crore and add another Rs 12 crore from its overseas collections.

This disappointment is notable as Jigarthanda Double X marked Karthik Subbaraj's theatrical comeback after a four-year hiatus. His previous two films, Jagame Thandhiram and Mahaan, were released directly on streaming platforms due to the pandemic.
Jigarthanda Double X features Raghava Lawrence and SJ Suryah in the lead roles. And is set to make its OTT debut on Netflix on December 8.
