Dulquer Salmaan’s much talked-about gangster drama film King of Kotha - which also features Gokul Suresh, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Chemban Vinod Jose in lead roles - is all set for its OTT release. Similar to other Malayalam gangster movies, this film too follows the journey of a heroic gangster, who experiences rise and fall during his reign.
In the past, Malayalam cinema has seen several gangster flicks that stood out for their unique handling of themes like love, friendship and family. Here’s a look at some of the most popular gangster films that lured the audience with their fast-paced action and emotional depth.
1. Indrajaalam - Sun NXT
Actioner Indrajaalam was a collaboration between Mohanlal and Thampi Kannanthanam. They have previously worked together in films like Maanthrikam and Rajavinte Makan. The story of Indrajaalam follows Kannan Nair, a former gangster who returns to seek revenge for his father’s death. Rajan P Dev delivers a chilling performance as Carlos, the ruthless antagonist, who is introduced in a shocking scene of him dragging a person behind his car. The script was written by Dennis Joseph, who wrote Mammootty’s career-changing film, New Delhi.
2. Samrajyam - Disney+ Hotstar
Samrajyam is an action-packed movie, directed by Joshiy, who is known for his expertise in action films. The plot revolves around Alexander, a powerful gang leader who experiences both success and downfall in the world of crime. Along with the fast-paced action sequences, the film also emphasises on the importance of relationships and human emotions, particularly friendship and motherhood. Madhu portrays IG Balakrishnan, Alexander’s estranged father, while Vijayaraghavan delivers an impressive performance as an acolyte of Mammootty’s character.

3. Abhimanyu - Amazon Prime Video
In Abhimanyu the plot follows a common trope where a young man gets involved with a criminal gang and rises to power in his community. The story centres on Hari (Mohanlal), a daily wage worker embroiled in Mumbai’s criminal world. Directed by Priyadarshan, the film also features romantic songs and occasional humour, and bears similarities to Aryan, which also starred Mohanlal.
4. Rajavinte Makan - Amazon Prime Video
Rajavinte Makan is celebrated as a cult classic due to its exceptional performances and tragic climax, but it is most notable for launching Mohanlal’s career. Vincent Gomas (Mohanlal) is a powerful figure in the underworld. He becomes infatuated with Nancy (Ambika), a lawyer. However, when Nancy loses her job due to Gomas’ actions, he attempts to make amends by offering her financial help.
Unbeknown to Gomas, Nancy has a connection with his arch enemy - the State Home Minister Krishnadas. The story follows the rivalry between Gomas and Krishnadas, as they employ different tactics to defeat one another. The film is an engaging watch, thanks to its gritty storyline and dialogues.
