A still from the film
The announcement of a Tamil remake of hit Tollywood film Agent Sai Srinivasa Atreya was received with much excitement by cinephiles. The movie, which was titled Agent Kannayiram, roped in Santhanam to play the titular character. Riya Suman was later brought on board to essay the female lead.
After postponing its release once, the film finally hit the screens on November 25. However, unlike the Telugu version, the Kollywood movie opened to negative response from critics and the audience. The project helmed by Manoj Beedha is now gearing up for its OTT premiere.
We had told you earlier that Sun NXT has bagged the movie's digital rights. The dark comedy will drop on the platform on December 23. An official announcement on the same has been made by the OTT avenue. Santhanam's first outing this year, Gulu Gulu, too, had its post-release digital premiere on Sun NXT.
The makers of Agent Kannayiram made several changes from the original version to suit the nativity factor for Tamil audience, but the attempt got backfired, thanks to overlong screenplay and unengaging sequences. It revolves around an aspiring detective who sets out to crack the mystery surrounding the dead bodies of a few people in his village.
He gets the shock of his life when he learns that his mother's dead body, too, has been involved in a huge scam carried out by a few money-minded criminals. How he takes on the dreaded gang forms the rest of the story.
The presence of Santhanam and Riya Suman was the only saving grace of Agent Kannayiram. Yuvan Shankar Raja's effective background score was wasted because of the uninspiring emotional scenes and tepid narrative style.
