Hollywood filmmaker Christopher Nolan's latest blockbuster, Oppenheimer, is all set to have its digital premiere in India next month. The movie will be available for streaming on JioCinema starting March 21.
Thanks to Nolan's steadfast loyalty to cinemas over streaming, Oppenheimer enjoyed a longer theatrical run compared to most recent Hollywood releases in the post-pandemic world. The film's exceptional global ticket sales performance also contributed to its sustained presence in theatres.
The producers of Oppenheimer further boosted profits by making the movie available on-demand platforms through a rental basis.
It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that Oppenheimer was a significant gamble on Nolan's part. He challenged many commercial norms in the process of making this epic movie.
It's noteworthy that Nolan's previous movie, Tenet, faced substantial setbacks at the global box office due to the pandemic situation. At a time when the industry was on the defensive and questioning every move amid the rapidly changing movie landscape, Nolan doubled down and decided to make Oppenheimer.
Oppenheimer defied all narrative expectations, being more complex and dialogue-heavy, and lacking adrenaline-pumping action sequences—all elements thought crucial in the post-pandemic market to attract audiences to theatres. Oppenheimer handsomely rewarded Nolan's faith in his storytelling style and belief in cinema, becoming the highest-grossing biopic of all time.
Released in cinemas last July to packed houses and glowing reviews from worldwide audiences and critics, the film sold nearly $1 billion worth of tickets during its theatrical run, making it the biggest R-rated biopic of all time.
Notably, Oppenheimer is poised to dominate the upcoming award seasons. The film swept the biggest awards at the recently held Bafta, winning seven awards, including Best Director (Nolan) and Best Actor (Cillian Murphy).
Based on the book American Prometheus, a biopic on the triumphs and struggles of American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the movie stars Cillian Murphy in the lead role, with Robert Downey Jr. Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, and Rami Malek among others in supporting roles.
