The actor reportedly quoted a sum of Rs. 150 crores for the film’s digital rights initially.
Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha is in troubled waters at the moment. After being on the receiving end of calls for a boycott, the film is witnessing an abysmal run at the box office at the moment. As per latest reports, after 10 days of its box office run, the film managed to earn just about Rs 54 crores in domestic earnings, and is under threat of being removed from cinemas if it fails to draw in more viewers. And to add to the film’s woes, it seems that it lost out on a deal with a leading OTT platform for the film’s digital premiere.
According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, Aamir had been in talks with Netflix regarding Laal Singh Chaddha’s OTT rights. The actor reportedly wanted the film to release on the platform as he expected to get a ‘global push’, as Netflix has more than 200 million subscribers. Aamir quoted a sum of Rs. 150 crores for Laal Singh Chaddha’s digital rights and asked that the film be released on Netflix only six months after its theatrical release.
This had led to a round of negotiations between Netflix and the actor, where the streaming giant tried to get Aamir to lower the sum and the time period for the film’s digital release. The streaming giant had backed out of the deal after Aamir refused to budge on the sum and time period. The actor reportedly expected Netflix to come back to the negotiating table after the film’s release.
Unfortunately, Laal Singh Chaddha failed to live up to its hype, and the report states that Netflix is unlikely to offer Aamir a deal now. Reportedly, the makers may go in for releasing the film on Voot as a ‘formality’, for a smaller sum than was quoted to Netflix.
