Adipurush: Disgruntled Prabhas fans shift focus to Salaar, Project K; say Om Raut's film is 'unwanted one'

Prabhas fans alarmed by his lack of form

A lot of hope was pinned on Adipurush as Prabhas' fans expected the film to mark his thumping return to form. The actor's previous two ventures, despite being commercially viable, were severely panned by critics and audiences alike with even his most ardent admirers remaining unimpressed. Prabhas carried the burden of living up to the Baahubali potential but it somehow seemed that he wasn't able to deliver on those implausible expectations, especially with the help of filmmakers who did not carry the flair and audacity of S.S. Rajamouli.

So, in that vein, Adipurush was set to be his return to glory and the film, too, following a few VFX hiccups a few months ago, seemed befitting of his stature. The improved visual palette of Om Raut's film raised those expectations and the lead-up to the theatrical release brimmed with optimism, as fans and moviegoers gathered together to welcome Prabhas in his glorious Lord Rama avatar.

And as promised, Adipurush arrived in theatres on June 16 with the public across the country thronging cinema halls even before the sun had risen. the hysteria was palpable in the air and nothing threatened to come in the way of the film from becoming a blockbuster, until it came to light that the film was its own biggest roadblock.

Soon enough, social media and the internet, in general, were abuzz with the audience's scathing and dismissive feedback with aspects such as the VFX, director Om Raut's error-ridden execution and others becoming the main issues of contention. Even the most forgiving of fans came out unimpressed and the opening-day verdict, considered objectively, suddenly appears quite underwhelming.

That said, a section of the audience has appreciated the efforts and some of Prabhas' fans, too, have emerged out of the cinema halls feeling quite happy and satisfied. And perhaps, it would be wise on our part to wait out the initial frenzy to gain a clear perspective on the merit of the film.

But what's alarming though, at this point, is the fact that the disgruntled Prabhas fans have already shifted their focus onto his next release, Salaar. "Is everything okay? 3 disasters in a row (Saaho - Radhe Shyam - Adipurush). Just wait for his comeback," said one user to echo the sentiments of countless others. "Adipurush is unwanted one 💯. #Prabhas next most wanted lineups.. 🥵🔥 #ProjectK #Salaar," wrote another Twitter user.

Another user wrote that, unlike Om Raut, Salaar director Prashanth Neel would not need Rs. 500-600 crores to pull off a 'masterpiece'. Another expressed that Neel and Sandeep Reddy Vanga can be trusted to deliver the right kind of spectacle with Prabhas and Nag Ashwin, who is directing Project K, too, is quite capable.

Well, twist it as much as you want but there's no denying that Adipurush isn't just that movie that fans had been waiting and longing for. The film may end up earning credible figures at the box office but it is quite apparent that fans expect a lot more from the superstar and his upcoming line-up of big releases now carries all the burden of tending to these wounds, so to speak.
