Abbabba trailer: KM Chaitanya’s latest comedy flick seems like a faithful remake of the Malayalam original

The film, which is set to open in theatres on July 1, is the Kannada version of Adi Kapyare Kootamani

This morning, Kiccha Sudeep launched the trailer of filmmaker KM Chaitanya’s latest comedy, Abbabba. Sudeep said, “Abbabba is Chaitanya’s 9th film. After a long time, here is a wonderful comedy; one with youthful content. I guess it is one of a kind. I was happy to launch the trailer and wish the team all the very best.” The film, which marks Mollywood actress Ann Augustine’s debut as producer in Kannada cinema, is the remake of the 2015 Malayalam film Adi Kapyare Kootamani, and will release in theatres on July 1. Chaitanya’s film has Likith Shetty and Amrutha Iyengar in the lead, with Sharath Lohithashwa, Avinash, Vijay Chendoor, Ajay Raj, among others in pivotal roles.

In earlier interactions with the media, Amrutha had said that although Abbabba is a remake, the team had made substantial changes to the narrative to make it more suitable for Kannada audiences. But going by the trailer of the film that came out today, it seems that Chaitanya has chosen to make faithful remake of the original.

Adi Kapyare Kootamani was set in a college boys’ hostel, run by a strict warden, a priest played by veteran actor Mukesh. Entry into the premises is strictly prohibited to girls/women, yet a bunch of students manage to smuggle in a girl, who has an agenda of her own. When they are then unable to let her out without alerting the whole world to her presence, a comedy of errors plays out. The film’s star cast included names like Dhyan Sreenivasan, Neeraj Madhav, Vineeth Mohan, Aju Varghese, Namitha Pramod and Roshan Mathew, among others.

Abbabba follows the original to the T, with Sharath Lohithashwa playing the warden, who is also a priest, while Likith Shetty takes on Dhyan’s role and Amrutha that of Namitha.
