The film, directed by Suresh Krissna, is gearing up for re-release in across 1,000 theatres after 22 years
Kamal Haasan's cult psychological action thriller Aalavandhan, which first released in 2001, is now gearing up for re-release. The latest we hear is that the film will hit screens on December 8 and that it will release across 1,000 theatres. The film's producer Kalaippulialaippuli Thanu, who bankrolled the film under his banner V Creations, announced that the film will re-release in over 1,000 screens on the special occasion.
What's Aalavandhan about?
Aalavandhan, which is said to be an adaptation of the novel Dhayam that was penned by Kamal Haasan himself in 1984. Ulaganayan is said to have written this novel in a serialized format for a local Tamil magazine and it appeared in 37 chapters.
Kamal Haasan appears in a dual role as brothers Nandu and Vijay, who were abused by their stepmother during their childhood. While Vijay manages to leave the house, Nandu remains stuck in the house. Nandu, ends up murdering his stepmother and is put in a mental asylum. Later, he is declared as a psychopath and dangerous to the society. Later, Nandu decides and tries to kill Vijay's fiancee as he visualizes her as his stepmother.

Star cast of Aalavandhan
The film, which was considered way ahead of its time, was directed by Suresh Krishna. The star cast comprised Kamal Haasan, Raveena Tandon, Manisha Koirala, Sarath Babu, Gollapudi Maruti Rao, Madurai GS Mani and Milind Gunaji to name a few. Aalavandhan was simultaneously filmed as Abhay. The Hindi version starred Naveen Nischol, Smita Jaykar and Vallabh Vyas.
Aalavandhan opened to mixed reviews but emerged as a cult classicWhen the film hit screens in 2001, it received mixed response from the critics and ended up as a box office failure. However, Aalavandhan, went on to attain a cult status over the years and people billed it as a film which was way ahead of its time.
