Kamal Haasan's cult classic Aalavandhan will hit more than 1000 screens worldwide on December 8. The Tamil version of the film is not available on the OTT platforms in India.
Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan's Aalavandhan is one of those gems that didn't get its due in terms of commercial success at the time of its initial release. With the growing level of film literacy among the public, the producers of this film are hoping the re-release of Aalavandhan will get its long-delayed due at the box office.
In a recent interview, director Suresh Krissna discussed the massive effort that went into making Aalavandhan, which dealt with the subject of childhood trauma and its enduring effect. Given that the common awareness about the issue of mental health left much to be desired in 2001, the themes and struggles of the protagonist Nandu might have not resonated with the audiences at the time.
And Suresh hopes that this historical mistake will be corrected with the latest re-release. The restored version of the film will arrive in worldwide cinemas on Friday.

"It’s been more than 20 years since Aalavandhan was released and the film didn’t get the recognition it deserved at the time of its release. It is one of Kamal sir’s best films featuring one of the best performances of his career, and Thanu sir pulled off such a big budget project back in those days itself. We had put in so much effort for this film and my day will be made if today’s audiences celebrate it," Suresh told The Hindu.
In Aalavandhan, Kamal plays a double role - Vijay, a decorated soldier and Nandu, a schizophrenic patient. Haunted by his childhood trauma, Nandu presumes Vijay's fiancee is the reincarnation of his evil stepmother and vows to save his brother from the ill fate that befell his father and ruined his life.

"Kamal Haasan beautifully described the film to me in one line. This is a film about twins. One is an animal and another is a trained animal," Suresh recalled earlier in another interview.
Aalavandhan will hit more than 1000 screens worldwide on December 8. The Tamil version of the film is not available on OTT platforms in India and this factor might work in the film's favour at the box office.
Aalavandhan also stars Raveena Tandon, Manisha Koirala, Sarath Babu, and Gollapudi Maruti Rao among others.
