Suriya's appearance from the song
Suriya-starrer Etharkkum Thunindhavan, which hit the screens last Friday, was his theatrical release after a hiatus of more than two years. The Pandiraj directorial, which opened to decent reviews from critics and the audience alike, has Priyanka Mohan, Sathyaraj, Saranya, Vinay Rai, Devadarshini and Ilavarasu among others essaying crucial roles in it.
The film which has been billed as a family drama revolves around an incident which reminds viewers about the infamous Pollachi sex scandal which rocked Tamil Nadu in 2019. Though a few appreciated the makers for coming up with a sensitive topic like this to deliver a relevant message, there are others who felt the subject deserved a better execution.
The project has now hit the headlines as it has courted a controversy for an unexpected reason. All India Netaji Party, a Coimbatore-based political outfit, has filed a complaint against the film's makers as they felt a song in it has hurt religious sentiments of people.
According to them, the song Ullam Urugudhaya, featuring Suriya and Priyanka Mohan in it, has insulted Lord Murugan, and they are demanding the makers to remove it from the film. They submitted a plea to the Coimbatore Police Commissioner on the same.
The members of the outfit also requested the police to take action on Suriya, director Pandiraj, music composer Imman and lyricist Yugabharathi for insulting Murugan. The song has Suriya dressed up as Murugan; Priyanka's character is an ardent devotee of Murugan in the movie.
Suriya's previous outing, Jai Bhim, too, courted controversy. Unlike the present scenario, the issue then was more serious when a caste outfit came out heavily against the film and Suriya. They staged protests and instigated its members to attack the actor. They even demanded a ban on Etharkkum Thunindhavan before its release.
