A new OTT platform, GudSho, promises to be a boon for small films in South Indian languages

While big platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix are chasing one big title after the other for a direct-to-OTT release, makers of small-budgeted and medium-budgeted films across South Indian languages are struggling to find takers on OTT. GudSho, a streaming platform launched by a Chennai-based group CONTUS hopes to give a new direction to new-age storytellers and release their films directly on OTT. The OTT platform is currently focused on acquiring content across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada, a report by The Hindu Business Line reads.

GudSho is a pay-per-view OTT platform where viewers can watch old classics, the latest blockbusters for free or a price as low as Rs 5 (and can go upto Rs 50). The pricing varies from film to film and the affordability of content to all kinds of audiences is reportedly the reason behind the same. The platform founders intend to take the OTT boom beyond metros towards tier-2 and tier-3 cities that mainstream platforms like Netflix and Amazon haven't been able to penetrate fully.

The platform has over 100 titles across four languages now and will invest Rs 50 crore in acquiring about 30-40 new titles, significantly in Tamil and Telugu, in the coming months. From the filmmaker's perspective, GudSho offers three models for acquiring new titles - namely outright purchase, assured guarantee, and revenue share. Pranavam, The Great Indian Kitchen, Papas, Gangleader, Aayirathil Oruvan, Billa are among the many movies available on GudSho.
