Rachel McAdams opens up on why she turned down Mean Girls commercial

Rachel McAdams, Mean Girls

Though released in the early 2000s, Mean Girls remains a beloved cult classic, that catapulted both Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams to fame. McAdams, despite playing the notorious Regina George, proved her acting chops and versatility, solidifying her place in Hollywood. Despite a 2011 attempt at a sequel, the film's magic proved difficult to recapture. The original's sharp humour, relatable characters, and cultural commentary cemented its place in pop culture history, which left the sequel in shadow.

About Walmart's commercial video

Hence, after almost two decades, the iconic Mean Girls reunited for Walmart's Black Friday commercial last month. The new campaign was organised to promote Walmart's hot holiday deals. The commercial showed Lindsay playing as guidance counsellor Cady Heron, weather reporter Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried), stage mom Gretchen Wieners (Lacey Chabert), proud dad Kevin Gnapoor (Rajiv Surendra) and bestie Damian (Daniel Franzese) returning to North Shore High School where a new group of mean girls rules the halls.

Rachel McAdams' iconic character

Notably absent from the Mean Girls reunion was the queen bee herself, Regina George. Fans can easily recall that this fiery character was brought to life by Rachel McAdams, who, despite being central to the movie's plot, did not join the recent gathering.

Why did Rachel McAdams turn down the reunion?

While having a conversation with Variety, McAdams finally opened up about not returning for the commercial. She shared that she was not excited for any commercial. She also shared that she actually did not even know that the group was returning. “I don’t know. I guess I was not that excited about doing a commercial if I’m being totally honest. A movie sounded awesome, but I have never done commercials, and it just didn’t feel like my bag. Also, I did not know that everyone was doing it. I would, of course, always love to be part of a Mean Girls reunion and hang with my plastics, but yeah, I found that out later,” Rachel stated.

About the new Mean Girls film

Mean Girls will now return with a new twist and a different ensemble cast of Reneé Rapp as Regina George, Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, and Christopher Briney as Aaron Samuels. This new version seems to follow the same storyline like the original one, where Cady, a new girl at school, hangs out with the coolest girls, the Plastics. Regina, the leader, is the queen of the school, but also kind of mean. Cady likes a boy Regina used to date, and suddenly, things get messy for Cady.

Release date

The new version of Mean Girls is scheduled to release in the theatres on January 12, 2024. Let’s see if this upcoming film could “fetch” a new milestone or not!
