Vishnu Vardhan Induri, who has produced films like Kangana Ranaut-starrer Thalaivi and Kabir Khan’s 83, announced his plans to make a film on freedom fighter Durgawati Devi. The Chennai-based producer who launched the film under ‘Azad Hind’ franchise, added that he will be making a series of films based on freedom fighters, every year.
Durgawati Devi, who was popularly known as Durga Bhabhi, was the woman who actively fought in the armed revolution against British Raj. She was an inspiration to several other freedom fighters such as Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad. She was also popular for accompanying Bhagat Singh on the train after he killed the British Police officer John Saunders and escaped in disguise. The lady lived an anonymous life in Ghaziabad after Independence, by running a school for poor children there in 1935. She passed away in 1999, at the age of 92.
Vishnu’s film on Durgawati, which is titled Veerangana Durgawati Devi, is said to focus on interesting episodes from the life story of the revolutionary lady. Even though her name was mentioned in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s 2006 film Rang De Basanti, this is the first time someone is attempting a full-fledged film on her. Soha Ali Khan played her role in the Aamir Khan-starrer, which also featured Siddharth, Atul Kulkarini, Sharman Joshi, and Kunal Kapoor.
