In 80's Buildup teaser, Santhanam plays a newlywed groom and seems thrilled to pose for his wedding photoshoot. However, the problem begins when the photographer wants the bride to smile bigger.
Actor Santhanam on Monday unveiled the teaser for his upcoming movie 80's Buildup coinciding with the Vijayadashami celebration.
The teaser is promoted as 'First Kalaai' shows a hilarious moment. If you have ever attended a wedding, you would know posing for a picture is one of the most unsettling experiences. You are not sure whether your smile is presentable, pleasant or looks devious. If there are multiple cameras, you are not sure which one to look at. And more importantly, where to keep hands?
We are bogged down by so many questions and self-doubts. Additionally, the pressure from the photographer, who keep asking us to smile bigger. The 'First Kalaai' riffs on this awkward wedding experience to establish the irony of the situation.

In the teaser, Santhanam plays a newlywed groom and seems thrilled to pose for his wedding photoshoot. However, the problem begins when the photographer wants the bride to smile bigger. And Santhanam is tasked with the responsibility of getting the bride to smiler bigger and better. So how does he do it? No, not my making her feel comfortable or cracking healthy jokes. But, he tries to persuade his wife to smile with threats of violence. Wait, it's not promoting patriarchy. Instead, it seems like a biting commentary on the patriarchy that prevailed during the bygone era, which is evident from the irony of the situation.
While Santhanam asks his wife not to be afraid, his actions leave the woman terrified and confused. She struggles without knowing how to cope with the situation. The husband even strikes on the back of her head forcing her to smile. Do you see the irony?
While Santhanam is known for his comedic roles, his performances are not always considered sensible and socially responsible. 80's Buildup, however, seems to change that perception.
Written and directed by S Kalyan, the movie also stars Radhika Preethi, K.S.Ravikumar, Anand Raj and Mansoor Ali Khan.
