Ponniyin Selvan 1, the 2022 Tamil film directed by filmmaker Mani Ratnam, has bagged the Best Tamil Film award at the 70th National Film Awards which was announced on Friday.

Ponniyin Selvan- Part 1, which released in 2022, was directed by filmmaker Mani Ratnam. The film is a historic drama, which is based on Kalki's novel Ponniyin Selvan. The film stars an ensemble including actors Vikram, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and others.

On Friday, the government of India announced the 70th National Film Awards. Ponniyin Selvan fetched several awards during the announcement, including Best Film, Best Composer for AR Rahman, and Best Cinematographer for Ravi Varman.

Ponniyin Selvan is set during the Chola dynasty, and is a fictional tale on characters including Adithya Karikalan, and other rulers who once ruled the present-day Tamil Nadu. Mani Ratnam had often stated that converting Kalki’s novel has been his dream project. Ponniyin Selvan has been made in two parts. Both the parts are available on Prime Video to stream.

The film narrates the story about the power struggle during the Chola rule between AD 900 and 950.
