Julia Ducournau, Titane

Julia Ducournau's body horror-thriller movie, Titane won Palme d'or at Cannes 2021. The film also stars Agathe Rousselle, Vincent Lindon, Garance Marillier and Laïs Salameh in the lead roles. This movie was indeed a step up from Julia’s previous film, Raw. It further defined what makes her a unique voice in the cinema. There are elements of unusual violence and moments in Titane that make the viewers squirm.

Kira Kovalenko, Unclenching The Fists

Kira Kovalenko is the first-ever female winner in the 24-year history of the prize. High in the mountains of North Ossetia, is a young woman who is trying to escape from Zaur. He is a strict father who worships discipline above all. This father doesn’t understand the difference between care and overprotection, which often leads to complex situations. Milana Aguzarova, Alik Karaev, Soslan Khugaev and Khetag Bibilov played pivotal roles in the film.

Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic, Murina

Murina is an 2021 internationally co-produced drama film. It is directed by Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović, who made her directorial debut with the movie.Murina is about an undeniable animosity between Julija (Filipovic) and her dad Ante (Lucev), who is verbally abusive to her and her long-suffering mother Nela (Danica Curcic). The movie won the Camara d'or award for best first feature.

Payal Kapadia, A Night of Knowing Nothing

Payal Kapadia's A Night of Knowing Nothing won the Best Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie is about L who is a student at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) falling in love with K. They decide to be together but K has to go back to his home. Thus, parting from his lover, he leaves for his village.

Tang Yi, All the Crows In The World

All The Crows In The World is a film presented on behalf of Hong Kong. It won the Short Film Palme D'Or. The 14-minute film by Tang Yi took home the top prize for short film at the Cannes Film Festival 2021. The winning short film follows an 18-year-old student Shengnan (Chen Xuanyu) who gets invited to a mysterious party by her cousin. Much to her surprise, the party is filled with greasy middle-aged men.
