5 unconventional roles in which Sharmaji Namkeen actor, the late Rishi Kapoor won our hearts

Rishi Kapoor won many hearts in his lifetime with his charm, impeccable acting skills, and heart-warming persona. Even after his demise, he continues to do so with his latest release Sharmaji Namkeen. Unfortunately, Rishi’s deteriorating health and subsequent demise led to actor Paresh Rawal stepping in to complete his role. Rishi Kapoor’s last act released on March 31 on Amazon Prime Video, and once you are done with it, here are some other films starring him in unconventional roles that you should check out.

Hum Tum (Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, YouTube, Apple TV)

While Hum Tum is an out-and-out Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji movie, it was Rishi Kapoor who charmed us with his supporting act. Rishi essayed the role of Arjun Kapoor (Saif’s father), a photographer separated from his wife (Rati Agnihotri) and a doting father who guides his son on matters of the heart. Watching Rishi play the piano and groove to his song, Main Shayar Toh Nahi from Bobby is the highlight of Hum Tum.

Agneepath (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Google Play, Apple TV)

Rishi primarily played the quintessential doe-eyed romantic hero who won over the ladies with his charm and good looks. So, his portrayal of Rauf Lala, a ruthless drug lord and human trafficker in the Hrithik Roshan-Priyanka Chopra starrer Agneepath took audiences by surprise. Lala is perhaps the darkest role Rishi has essayed in his 5-decade long career and is one of his best.

Mulk (ZEE5, Vi Movies and TV)

Anubhav Sinha’s courtroom drama Mulk showcased yet another unseen side of Rishi Kapoor. He plays Advocate Murad Ali Mohammed, the patriarch of a family and the uncle of Shahid (Pratiek Babbar), a young man brainwashed into terrorism. When the prosecutor accuses the entire family of being terrorists, the task falls on Murad’s Hindu daughter-in-law (Taapsee Pannu) to safeguard their family’s reputation.

102 Not Out (Amazon Prime Video)

In this heart-warming comedy, Rishi plays the grumpy and paranoid 72-year-old Babulal Vakharia, the son of the 102-year-old happy-go-lucky Dattatraya Vakharia (Amitabh Bachchan). When his old father puts forth a challenge – do as I say or go live in an old-age home, Babu must mend his ways. But there’s more to that challenge than meets the eye – especially when another loved one is involved.

Rajma Chawal (Netflix)

Imagine you’re talking with someone online, and you find out it’s your dad catfishing you! That’s the plot of Rajma Chawal. In this comedy-drama, Rishi Kapoor plays the role of Raj Mathur, a widowed father who tries to connect with his son (Anirudh Tanwar) using social media. He pretends to be the young and beautiful Tara and even gets his son to open up. But what happens when the truth is revealed?

Rishi Kapoor may not be with us anymore, but he will live on as a legend forever.
