Kadhal Desam is one of the iconic Tamil romance films. The film is written and directed by late filmmaker Kathir, and produced by KT Kunumon under the banner Gentleman Film International. Kadhal Desam starred Tabu as the female lead, with Abbas and Vineeth playing the male leads. It marked Abbas' debut in Tamil. Others part of the cast include late singer SP Balasubrahmanyam, Vadivelu, Chinni Jayanth and Srividya, among others.

Kadhal Desam is a love triangle story. It revolves around an orphan and a captain of college's football team who turn friends from foes. However, they soon see themselves divided after they realise they are in love with the same girl. Kadhal Desam was a commercial success at the time of its release.
Kadhal Desam has music scored by AR Rahman. All the tracks from the film, especially Mustafa Mustafa and Thendrale, were chartbusters at the time of its release. Late filmmaker and cinematographer KV Anand had cranked the camera for the film which was edited by B Lenin and VT Vijayan.

Kadhal Desam is one of the earliest films in Tamil cinema to be set against the backdrop of a college campus. The film primarily catered to a younger crowd of audience. It was shot in and around the cities of Chennai, Bangalore, Ooty, Mudumalai, Bandipur, Mumbai and Vishakhapatnam. With the success of the film, it set a wave of cinema targeting the youth in motion.
