As many as 265 films including the Hindi film 12th Fail have been shorted for the 96th Academy Awards' Best Film category.

2018: Everyone is a Hero, directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, has rekindled Oscar hopes by getting shortlisted for the Best Film category this time. The list of 265 films includes the Hindi film 12th Fail as well. On January 23, the official list of nominees for the Best Film category will be released. Meanwhile, The Fourth claims that Jude is not optimistic about this new shortlist.
The film starring Tovino Thomas was previously excluded from the 96th Academy Awards' Best International Feature Film category. The films that received nominations for Best International Feature include Amerikatsi from Armenia, Perfect Days from Japan, and Society of the Snow from Spain.
Reactions to the movie's Oscar entry were divided, with some people happy that a Malayalam movie had a chance at such a prestigious award. Many had also argued that other films, like Vidhuthalai 1, should have been considered for this award. One may also include Mammootty's Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam in the list of deserving Malayalam films.
Meanwhile, the director expressed regret to the audience for his film's exclusion. He noted that the Oscar shortlist was revealed, and unfortunately, 2018—Everyone Is A Hero' did not make it into the final 15 out of 88 international films from around the world. “I sincerely apologise to all my well-wishers and supporters for disappointing you all,” he wrote.
Jude had also thanked the producers, technicians, artists, and viewers for their contributions to the movie's success. He also expressed his gratitude to all Indian filmmakers for their support, citing Rajamouli, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Resul Pookkutty, Guneet Monga, Anurag Kashyap, and Sidharth Roy Kapoor, among them.

2018: Everyone is a Hero, which was released on May 5 last year, was critically acclaimed as well as a commercial success. It is based on actual incidents that occurred during the 2018 Kerala floods.
Anto Joseph, Venu Kunnappilly, and C K Padmakumar produced the film under the banner of Kavya Film Company and P K Prime Production Producers. Akhil George handled the camera work for 2018. The soundtracks and background music for this movie were composed by Nobin Paul.
It featured Tovino Thomas, Indrans, Asif Ali, Narain, Lal, Kunchacko Boban, Sidhique, Aparna Balamurali, Sshivada, and Vineeth Sreenivasan in the lead roles. The film is streaming on SonyLiv in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada.
