Rajamanikyam, the iconic Malayalam action-comedy film which features Mammootty in the titular role, marked the directorial debut of celebrated filmmaker, Anwar Rasheed.
Rajamanikyam, the action-comedy film released in 2005, remains one of the finest mass films in the career of its leading man, Mammootty. The megastar stunned the audiences with his transformation as an illiterate businessman from a smalltown in Thiruvananthapuram in the film, which was a massive box office success. Anwar Rasheed, the renowned filmmaker made his directorial debut with Rajamanikyam, which completed 19 years of its release, on November 3, 2024.
The Mammootty starrer, which is about to be completed 19 years after its release, is one of those films most Malayalam mass cinema fans revisit quite often. The megastar’s iconic dialogues humour, and strong base of family drama make the Anwar Rasheed directorial one of the rare mass films that aged well. The Anwar Rasheed directorial revolves around Muthu, a young boy who was abandoned by his mother Muthu Lakshmi, after she remarries millionaire Raja Ratnam Pillai. However, Pillai adopts him and renames him Raja Manikyam. Even though he stays away from his mother’s family, the tragic demise of his beloved step-father forces Raja Manikyam, who is well-known by the name Bellari Raja, to make a comeback. He takes over Pillai’s business empire and responsibilities, irking his stepbrother Raja Selvam, and sister Rani.

Mammootty played Rajamanikyam in the film, which features Manoj K Jayan in the role of Raja Selvam. Sai Kumar appeared as Raja Rathnam Pillai, while Chithra Shenoy played Muthu Lakshmi. Rahman, Cochin Haneefa, Ranjith, Maniyanpilla Raju, Salim Kumar, Bheeman Ragu, Padma Priya, Sindhu Menon, Suresh Krishna, Baburaj, and others appeared in supporting roles. Alex Paul composed the music score. Sanjeev Shankar and Ranjan Abraham handled the cinematography and editing, respectively. The project, penned by TA Shahid, was produced by the banner Valiyaveettil Movie International.
