Mayakkam Enna mostly opened to positive reviews upon its release. However, one particular song, Kadhal Yen Kadhal became a subject of debate as years went by, for its misogynistic lyrics targeting women for rejecting a boy. Selvaraghavan had then apologised for allowing the usage of such lyrics, which were penned by Dhanush, and said as a director, he should have been more responsible.
Mayakkam Enna marked one of the collaborations of Dhanush (as actor) and Selvaraghavan (as director) who made films like Kadhal Kondein, Pudhupettai, and Naane Varuven. The film also marked Richa Gangopadhyay’s debut in Tamil.
