The film is the directorial debut of cinematographer Karm Chawla, best known for Kirik Party
Vinay Rajkumar’s much-delayed 10 released in theatres today. Produced by Pushkara Mallikarjunaiah’s Pushkar Films, 10 is the directorial debut of cinematographer Karm Chawla and has been ready for release since late 2019. But then, the pandemic struck and the production house also ran into some financial trouble and then there was no word on 10, until last week.
Out of nowhere, it seemed, Pushkara announced that the film would be in theatres on December 16 through a social media post. Over the next few days, he released two songs and the trailer online and boom, the film was in theatres. Netizens, who were following the development urged Pushkara not to release the film on that day for two reasons – it was competing with Avatar: The Way of Water at the box office and the team had done absolutely no promotions for 10. They also said that a direct-to-OTT release would be better.
But then, turns out, even if Pushkara had chosen a different date, there would have been no promotions anyway. Director Karm had taken to Instagram that the team had no money for any sort of publicity. The hurry to release the film in theatres, it would seem, is because Pushkara was able to sell the film to an OTT platform. According to the buzz in industry circles, after a brief spell where platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Voot Select and Zee5 Kannada were buying titles directly for release, that has stopped and streamers are insisting on a bare minimum theatre release before taking the movie.
10 has been sold to Amazon Prime Video and if the theatrical release is any indication, the film is likely to land on the platform within a month’s time. Mid-January 2023 is when the film is likely to be available.
10 which has Vinay Rajkumar in the lead, has him playing a boxer who rises the ranks with a lot of hard work, only to have it all stripped away. How he finds redemption forms the crux of the narrative. The film also stars Anusha Ranganath and Gopalkrishna Deshpande in pivotal roles.
