10 Films to avoid if you are claustrophobic

Have you ever noticed that some of the best and most thrilling films are the ones that have been shot in confined spaces? Although it sounds absurd, the movies on this list do an exceptional job of portraying the characters' reality and narrating the story clearly despite being shot in a confined area.

Here's a list of 10 such films that will surely take you on a journey, even though they are shot within the boundaries of an enclosed space. However, if you have claustrophobia, it would be best to avoid the films on this list.

  1. All is lost

This film is a survival drama about a man lost at sea. It revolves around Robert Redford and is shot on a boat trying to stay afloat. To allow the audience to experience claustrophobia, Frank G. DeMarco shot the entire film within arm's reach of the actor. This helps keep the audience on their toes and engaged with the character at all times. A fun fact about the film, it was shot in the same tank as Titanic.

2. Buried

It is indeed shocking to learn that this film was shot inside a wooden coffin. The film stars Ryan Reynolds, who played an Iraq-based American truck driver who is buried alive after being attacked. He must serve with only a lighter, flask, knife, pen and a phone. One of the scenes saw Reynolds actually being buried when the coffin was filled with sand. What makes the viewers feel at one with the actor is that the entire film was shot from the coffin's interior. It is interesting to know that the actor suffers from claustrophobia in reality. When asked about the last day of the shoot, he said, "It was unlike anything I experienced in my life, and I never ever want to experience that again."

3. Gravity

The Oscar-winning film by Alfonso Cuaron stars Sandra Bullock, who struggles to stay alive after an accident in space. For the majority of the movie, Bullock is placed inside a rig, in which she spent over 10 hours during the shoot. Unlike the other films in this category, Gravity aimed to make the confined space look as open and inviting as possible.

4. Panic Room

This film by David Fincher stars Kristen Stewart and Jodie Foster as a mother-daughter duo who hide out in their panic room after burglars enter their home. Fincher is known for his iconic film Fight Club, which was filmed in 150 locations. Looks like he chose to narrow it down considerably with this thriller. Other than the opening and closing of the film, the whole movie is shot either in the panic room or inside the house.

5. The Ghazi Attack

The film revolves around an Indian naval submarine intercepting a Pakistani submarine in Indian waters and spoiling their plans of destroying INS Vikrant. The majority of the film is shot inside a submarine, and the combination of stress caused due to evading the enemy and the psychological impact of being trapped underwater in a confined space makes the film a must-watch.

6. Saw

This psychological thriller involves two men who find themselves locked in a prehistoric bathroom. They must find out who is behind this mystery and how to escape. Every minute of the film is thrilling and gripping; it will be sure to keep you at the edge of your seat throughout. The unbelievable end of the film makes viewers rethink the meaning of self-isolation.

7. The Man from Earth

This film revolves around a professor who claims he has lived for over 14,000 years. At his farewell, he lets his colleagues in on this detail about his life. The entire film is set in his house, and the audience is able to follow the storyline through the dialogues between the characters.

8. The Killing Room

The Killing Room revolves around four volunteers who sign up for what seems to be a regular paid research study. However, they later discover that they are now involved in a government program that was said to be terminated 20 years ago. The thriller involves these four individuals being called into a white room one by one. The majority of the film is shot in this room, where each volunteer goes through intense physical and psychological trauma.

9. Miss Julie

Miss Julie is a film about breaking social hierarchies and gender norms in society. Although the film contains scenes of the characters in Jean's bedroom, there is only one other scene outdoors. Other than that, the entire movie is set in the kitchen, and the overwhelming claustrophobia Miss Julie experiences there is evident to viewers.

10. Room

The film revolves around a woman who has been held captive in a room for seven years with her son. We witness how she keeps him and herself occupied at all times and tries to experience the outdoors through her imagination. The mother-son duo attempt to escape in the film, and the young boy manages to step into the outside world for the first time in his life.
