Vaibhav Reddy on Bench Life

Vaibhav Reddy is a popular name in Tamil cinema. He is making a comeback to Tollywood with Sony Liv's web series Bench Life which also has Aakanksha Singh as the female lead. He speaks to us about doing a crazy role, working with a lady director, not doing more work in Telugu, and future projects. Here is the transcript.

How did you land this project?

I have a very close association with Niharika and the mega family. I treat her like my sister and when they penned the character of Balu, they felt I would be the perfect choice and approached me. I was not keen to do a Telugu web series as I wanted to make my comeback with a proper feature film. But once I heard my character, I felt it was in my zone and decided to go ahead.

What attracted you to the character of Balu?

There are no two ways about it as far as the character of Balu is concerned. He is a fool and is not serious in life. The way the dialogues were written, my interactions with the heroine, scope to project myself in a new comedy avatar drew me a lot to this character.

How was it working with the likes of Rajendra Prasad?

I have grown up on his movies and it was a dream come true to do a series with him. He supported me a lot in all our combination scenes. If you watch the series, my comedy scenes with Prasad Garu will be one of the highlights. The way our dialogues flow in the scenes will be hilarious to watch and I learned a lot from Prasad Sir.

Did you have any assumptions about working with a lady director?

There is no more gender bias in the film industry. Gone are the days when everyone used to feel weird when a lady director or a technician would be on set. The moment Manasa started narrating the story, I found out that she had a spark. She is very clear in her head and even during the shoot, if I would ask for a change in the dialogue, she would come up with a new one in minutes. Manasa has narrated Bench Life in a very fun and sensible manner.

What should one expect from Bench Life?

There are so many characters that are relatable in the series. Each one of us will motivate you in some way or the other. Also, the fun generated in the show is hilarious and the emotions towards the end are quite meaningful. So, those who start watching our show will not be disappointed one bit.

Being a Telugu guy why are not doing films in Tollywood?

I have done a few films which did not work. To be frank, I am not getting proper offers in Telugu cinema. I wanted to make a comeback and am hoping that Bench Life will bring me back into the game. As of now, my Tamil career is flourishing and I have no complaints about it.

Future Projects?

I have three films lined up in Tamil and one of them will release next month. I am hoping to get a lot of calls after the release of Bench Life and have kept my fingers crossed. Let's see what happens.
