Ruchi Malviya: Censorship on OTT is essential to some degree

Ruchi Malviya, who debuted with Naseeruddin Shah starrer Dharam Sankat Mein was recently been seen in Disney+ Hotstar Quix show Mukesh Jasoos. While she has already worked with Sunny Kaushal in a short film titled The Embrace, the actress also wishes to work with his brother and the current heartthrob of the country - Vicky Kaushal. ,

OTTplay caught up with the actress to chat about her experience working with the legendary actor Shah in her first film and the veteran actress Poonam Dhillon in her last web series as well as her future projects and more.

Speaking about Mukesh Jasoos and her character in the show, Ruchi revealed that she auditioned for the character from home, considering the coronavirus situation. “I got the call from our director Heena D'Souza and she explained what Sulekha, my character should be and told me that she wants me to improve on my role. She also gave me the freedom to work on it in my own way. So, I recorded the audition video myself, sent it to them and completely forgot about it as I was auditioning for other shows as well. However, I got a call from them again and was told that I have been shortlisted for another round and after that, I got the part,” she shared.

When we asked about her experience of sharing the screen space with the veteran actress Poonam Dhillon, the actress excitedly replied, “It was amazing, I really couldn't have asked for more, I mean to actually be the lead of the show and then to have Poonam Ji playing the part of your mother, I was so honoured.”,

“I wanted to be fully prepared because I knew she knew the game already. And I cannot mess it up at any point. So I knew that she's there and I'm just going to treat that as a learning experience of whatever I could transform because it's a big opportunity for me,” Ruchi added.

When quizzed about how the sudden burst of content on OTT platforms is fruitful for the aspiring actors, she answered, “It's good because, with the OTT platforms, a lot more variety of content is being made. Now people are experimenting with it and as people are creating more and more content, more actors can get cast in each of those roles. As an actor, we get an opportunity to play those different roles. So I think it's a win-win situation for all of us.”,

Expressing her views on the pros and cons of censorship on OTT platforms, Ruchi opined that a little regulation everywhere is essential. “Having said that, as long as it's not interfering with the story of the content, I think it's good. I think to some degree, it's essential,” she added.

On how she would prioritize her projects on TV, OTT and films, the actress said, “Of course, the film is a big game, so I will be very honest about it. Yes, the film is something that I will always choose first, but OTT of course has turned out to be great. So first I'll choose film, then OTT and then TV.”,

Talking about her experience working with Sunny Kaushal in The Embrace, Ruchi shared, “Before working in The Embrace, I and Sunny worked in a film by Percept (Picture Company). For shooting, we went to Doha and we shot for a continuous period of a month or two over there, so we kind of gelled and then we became good friends.”,

The actress added, “When I signed The Embrace, I didn't know this and he was opposite me. But when we went to actually do the readings with the director, he entered the room and I couldn't have been happier because I actually had worked with him.”,

Working with the legend Naseeruddin Shah in her debut film Dharam Sankat Mein was a dream come true for Ruchi. “I couldn't even have imagined that I would get my first film with him. He's a legendary actor. He's always been my role model and to start my career with him was great. I'm like, okay, it was meant to be,” the actress said excitedly.

Ask her which Bollywood actor she’d like to work with and she quips with Vicky Kaushal’s name.

Talking about her future projects, the actress mentioned that currently, she is busy giving auditions for a couple of films and shows and waiting to start shooting for one of the projects once everything goes back to normal.

When asked about what she’d like to tell her 16-year-old self, Ruchi becomes a bit nostalgic, remembering her teenage years. The actress revealed that she came to Bombay at the age of 17, while she decided to do so when she was 16. “I would say that I’m glad that at that point I went with my instincts,” she said.

So is there any dream role that’s on her bucket list that she’d like to portray on screen someday? “I would love to work in something like Gone Girl or Rosemary's Baby,” says Ruchi and signs off.
