Rajesh Kumar reflects on his evolution beyond comedy since Sarabhai vs Sarabhai: 'Thoda effort laga...' | Exclusive

Rajesh Kumar, who is gearing up for the release of Binny and Family, recently spoke to OTTPlay about his growth beyond comedy since Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai.

Rajesh Kumar rose to fame instantly after he portrayed the character of Rosesh Sarabhai in the Television sitcom 'Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai. His character as a self-proclaimed 'momma boy' is still termed by the audience as one of his iconic characters. The actor played multiple roles post that to prove his versatility as an actor including films and series like Kota Factory, Rautu Ka Raaz, Yeh Meri Family, and others.

Recently, to promote his upcoming family drama Binny And Family, the actor sat down for an exclusive chat with OTTplay where the actor spoke about his evolution beyond comedy since Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. Read on for details!

Rajesh Kumar reveals he gave extra effort to prove his versatility as an actor rather than just 'comedy'

When asked if his iconic character of Rosesh in the popular TV show Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai typecast him as a comedy actor, Rajesh Kumar said, "Not typecast. I never got any other roles based on Rosesh. The positive side of it happened is I established more as a comedy actor, that got typecasted."

Further speaking about whether he had to prove himself that he could do different roles than comedy, the actor said, “Thoda effort laga. Aur yeh samjhaane mein effort laga ki comedy jo hai yeh vidha hai, yeh ek aisi vidha hai, it’s like classical music, classical singing. Bathroom singing har koi kar leta hai lekin classical agar kisiko bol do gaane ke liye toh they are not prepared." (It took a little effort. And it took effort to understand that comedy is this genre, it is such a genre, it's like classical music, classical singing. Everyone can do bathroom singing but if someone has to sing classical lyrics then they are not prepared).

"So if you’re aware and if you know how comedy is, that is an art, you should be a good artist in portraying humor and comedy. You are required to perform comedy, you simply cannot perform comedy. Baaki emotion mein agar rona hai toh I can take help of glycerine, agar chillana hai to I can scream but when you are supposed to perform humor that it connects with everyone and everyone laughs and you’re still portraying a character and delivering it at the drop of it, it’s right," he added.

Meanwhile, on the professional front Rajesh will be next seen in Binny And Family, directed by Ssanjay Tripaathy. The film also stars Anjini Dhawan, Pankaj Kapoor, Himani Shivpuri, and Charu Shankar in important roles. It is slated to release on 27th September in theatres.
