Pippa actor Ishaan Khatter: Heroism is in being vulnerable and being human | Exclusive

During an exclusive interview with OTTplay, Ishaan Khatter talks about humanising heroism in army films.

Ishaan Khatter, for the first time in his career, is part of a biopic. The actor plays the lead role of Balram Singh Mehta in the soon-to-be released Prime Video film, Pippa. The film is based on the book The Burning Chaffees by the Brigadier. When it's a war film, the chapters will focus on heroism. Now, in the film industry, the definition of heroism has changed over the years, even with the movies based on the Indian armed forces. During an exclusive interview with OTTplay, Ishaan was asked about his definition of "heroism."

Ishaan Khatter on heroism

The actor told us, "Of course, there is an element of bravery, bravado, and courage that you can take away from any army film, I would say. But I think beneath that, there are layers to unpack because every soldier is first a person."

He further shared, "I think heroism is in being vulnerable in being human, and in being able to overcome your weaknesses when the time arrives and when duty calls. I think that's one of the most beautiful things about the heroism of Balram Singh Mehta, this film, and the character."

Talking more in the context of the film, Ishaan added, "There's also the heroism of a young soldier who's enthusiastic and wants to be a leader and is waiting for his chance, but when he falls into that place by chance and when that responsibility falls on his shoulders, he realises that the greater value of leadership is not about yourself; it's about the people that you are leading. It's about the cause that you're leaning towards, and I think that is one of the most beautiful qualities of heroism in the script for this character."

Pippa is directed by Raja Krishna Menon and also stars Mrunal Thakur and Priyanshu Painyuli as siblings to Ishaan. The Prime Video release is set to premiere on November 10, 2023, ahead of the Diwali weekend.
