Each one of us who had to go through the phase of demonetization in India almost a decade ago will have stories to tell. Of running out of hard cash, of standing in queues at the banks only to get Rs 2000 a day because that was the limit, of someone having to take some complex path to turn their black money into white. These stories were of the upper middle class and those beyond, but what happened to the people who were living hand to mouth? There are so many tragic stories there. Ticket a short film on Shortfundly, is one such example where a man is looking for the ticket of his life amid the nation battling multiple socio-economic battles, but where does he stand in all this? Ticket Plot:

A man whose name is as inconsequential as the people you pass by every day and don’t even bother to look at. He is one of the many, a man from the crowd of millions who are living a similar life or even worse. He sets out every day in a monotonous pattern: he takes a bus, does his job, gets the money, takes the ration for the day, goes home, hands over the daily supply to his wife, and a tram ticket to his son. His life is pushed to the margins where he is a mere spectator to the circus that the country has become, and his only gateway to it is a small window in a house in a dark alley that leads to his home.

Ticket Analysis:

Written, directed, and produced by Abhir Das, the world he creates is real; the characters are indeed fictional, but everything they are going through is real. Here is a man who lives a monotonous life without complaining. He doesn't have much to celebrate or look up to, but whatever little he has is also on the verge of being disrupted. In this case, what exactly is his purpose, what exactly is his ticket to a better life, or maybe just a life, at least? Das explores this with silences. Only the chaos and turmoil around this family of three get to speak. Not them. Maybe this is reading too much between the lines, but in the larger context of this system, their voice is as inconsequential as it is in the film.

They are only expected to exist with the very little they have, and Abhir Das does a fabulous job of capturing that with his vision for this story. The idea of the news breaking every day while he crosses one particular alley works as he is not bothered about it because all he has are coins and he has no fortune to exchange notes for. When LPG gets more expensive, there is no tension for him because probably the connection never even reached him. He has made peace with the monotony while still looking for that ticket.

What breaks the monotony in Ticket is a spectacular scene where "Kaala Rey" from Gangs of Wasseypur Part 2 plays in the same house while he is in the same dimly lit alley. He lights a cigarette just like Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the film and starts walking, but this time the light bulb does not turn on in the background as it did in the movie. The power gets cut and his happiness is just momentary. Abhik conveys the fanboy in him and also a great message.
